My story

Hello and welcome to my blog! To introduce myself, my name is Kathryn and I am The Steady Cook. As you have guessed it, I love food…food that nourishes the body and steadies the soul. I am a full-time wife, mother, and scientist. Blogging is a part-time gig for me, but a full-time love affair.

I live in the beautiful Columbia River Gorge in the small town of White Salmon, Washington. I’m not originally from Washington and grew up in both the deep south (Mississippi) and the midwest (Wisconsin). These very different regions have given me an appreciation for the unique traditions, lifestyles and cooking practices of the north, south and west; my recipes reflect this diversity.

Growing up, my parents always planted huge gardens. Fresh fruits and vegetables were always in abundance. We ate what was in season and preserved the extra for the winter months. My mom is a fantastic cook, who I have learned so much from. Whenever I hit a snag, I give mom a call for advice. She always has a helpful tip to provide.

I try to cook with responsibly raised meats, wild caught fish and locally grown, organic produce and eggs, as much as possible. I am passionate about environmental health and social well being, particularly as it relates to sustainable food production and farming and the equitable treatment of employees. I value these practices because they aid in the protection and health of our environment and our communities. So, my goal is to not only showcase my recipes, but the farmers, producers and fishers that live in my community and help to fill my pantry and refrigerator with delicious and nutritious food. Please enjoy reading their stories HERE.

I hope my ideas help to bring you and your families happiness and health from the inside out. Please enjoy my recipes, tips and stories, and always… stay steady.

Kathryn
